Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicant must be 21 years of age at time of appointment.
  • High school diploma or G. E. D. Certificate.
  • Honorable Discharge from Military Service (if applicable).
  • United States Citizen.
  • No Residency Requirement.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid drivers license with a limited traffic record.
  • Any usage of non-prescribed drugs must have been limited and not recent. Applicants will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Applicants may not have any felony convictions or its equivalent under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Applicants must be of good moral character.
  • Average or above average physical condition with weight in proportion to height. No physical or mental condition that hampers performance and causes unnecessary risk to oneself or the community. Able to walk, run, and stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to traverse or climb irregular surfaces.
  • Applicants must have a full range of motion, be able to operate Sheriff’s Office firearms and be able to participate in all aspects of physical training.
  • Normal hearing and sense of smell.
  • Eyesight requirement of 20/20 or correctable to 20/20 in both eyes. Full color vision or corrected color vision certified by a physician. Night and peripheral vision required.
  • Demonstrate responsibility and stable behavior in their past employments, financial history, personal relationships, and personality.
  • Applicants must read, write and speak English fluently.

      For Deputy Sheriff

  • PROBATIONARY Hourly/Annual - $18.11/$37,668.80 (minimum)
  • CLASS B Hourly/Annual - $19.45/$40,456.00 (minimum)
  • CLASS A Hourly/Annual - $20.89/$43,451.20 (minimum)
  • MASTER DEPUTY Hourly/Annual - $24.96/$51,916.80 (minimum)
  • MASTER DEPUTY Hourly/Annual - $32.14/66,851.20 (maximum)

          Kansas certified officers, previously Kansas certified officers, and
          officers certified in other states with certification hours recognized
          by KLETC are eligible to start at Class B pay rate.

The following procedures have been established for the screening of Deputy Sheriff Applicants:

  • CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATION - The Deputy Sheriff application process begins with the Civil Service examination, which will be administered by arrangement with the Personnel Unit. Applicants who score 70% or better will receive an employment application. Applicants who score less than 70% may retake the examination after 30 days.  Veteran Preference Applicants, as defined in K.S.A. 73-201, shall be afforded a 5% meaningful scoring adjustment on the Civil Service Test.  Applicants requesting the Veteran Preference shall provide a copy of their DD-214.
  • EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION - Applicants should return their employment applications with all requested information and documents to the Sheriff’s Office Personnel Unit. Applications will be reviewed for completeness, attachment of necessary documents and the applicant’s attainment of the minimum qualifications for the position.
  • PERSONAL INTERVIEW - A standardized interview will be conducted to assess the applicant’s personality, character, work habits, motivation, qualifications, and various other matters relevant to the position sought.
  • PHYSICAL ABILITY EXAMINATION - A physical ability examination will be utilized to measure the physical abilities necessary to perform the tasks associated with law enforcement personnel in Johnson County.
  • POLYGRAPH EXAMINATION - Applicants will be interviewed by the Sheriff’s Office polygraph examiner. The polygraph examination will explore information provided on the application and information discussed in the personal interview as well as the background history.
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION - An in-depth background investigation will be conducted to obtain information on applicants in the following categories: Criminal and traffic history, civil litigation history, educational history, financial history, neighborhood references, personal references, spouse interview, and other background areas as needed. All background information will remain confidential.
  • CIVIL SERVICE BOARD - The Civil Service Board will evaluate the information collected by investigators for each applicant and may interview applicants. The Board has the statutory responsibility to determine whether an applicant shall be certified as eligible for employment and to place certified applicants on the eligibility list. Any applicant declared ineligible for employment may reapply for employment in one year's time.
  • SHERIFF’S BOARD - Applicants placed on the eligibility list will be interviewed by a Board of Deputy Sheriffs who will make a recommendation concerning the employment of each applicant. Applicants recommended for employment may receive a conditional offer of employment. An appointment to Deputy Sheriff may be made after completion of relevant medical and psychological testing.
  • PHYSICAL/DRUG ANALYSIS - Pre-employment physical exam and drug screen will be performed.
  • PSYCHOLOGICAL INTERVIEW - The psychologist retained by the Sheriff’s Office will evaluate the results of the psychological tests taken previously by applicants and will then interview each applicant. The psychologist will evaluate each applicants interpersonal skills, personal traits, and other factors that have a relationship to the successful performance of law enforcement duties.

Frequently asked questions:

Q) What kind of written test do you give?
A) The written test is a 100 question, one hour timed, multiple choice test. It is a reading comprehension test in which you read a short statement and then choose the best corresponding answer. Applicants who score 70% or better will receive an employment application. Applicants who score less than 70% may retake the civil service examination after thirty days.

Q) What determines the hire date for new Deputies?
A) New Deputy hire dates are based on police academy start dates. Offices are hired three weeks before the next academy start date to allow orientation training, handgun training, and training on Sheriff's Office policy and procedures.Q) What police academy does the Sheriff's Office send officers to?
A) The Sheriff's Office sends new Deputies to both the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchison Kansas and the Regional Police Academy at the Johnson County Community College. KLETC is fourteen weeks long and is a residential academy and the Regional Academy is fifteen weeks long and is a day academy. New Deputies are assigned to go to the academy that correlates with their start date.

Q) Where are new Deputies assigned to work?
A) All new Deputies are assigned to one of the two Adult Detention Centers.

Q) What training do new Deputies receive?
A) New Deputies receive three weeks of orientation training, followed by fourteen or sixteen weeks in the police academy, followed by three weeks of classroom training, followed by four weeks working in the Detention Center with a Jail Training Officer.

Q) How long would I work in the Detention Center before I can transfer to another division?
A) Deputies are eligible to request transfers to other divisions after they have successfully completed Kansas State Certification requirements. Transfers are based on job skills, performance, noteworthy certifications, seniority, etc.
