Gary R. Howell was appointed by Sheriff Frank Denning as Director of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Criminalistics Laboratory on January 12, 2005.
Director Howell had retired as Director of the Kansas City Police Crime Laboratory in December 2004 after holding this position since 1976. He started in the crime laboratory as a Forensic Chemist in 1968. He graduated from University Missouri Kansas City with a BA in chemistry.
Director Howell has written numerous forensic science articles and is active in many professional organizations. He has helped evaluate, design, and organize three crime laboratories in Kansas City to reflect the changes and growth of forensic science in our community. Further, he was active in developing criteria for national accreditation that crime labs use today.
He has received numerous awards for professional and civic accomplishments over the years. He states, “The personnel at the JCSO Crime Lab are a cohesive team of well-trained scientists dedicated to providing the most advanced, accurate and ethical evidence possible to help make this a safe community.”
Gary is a native of Johnson County and graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School as did his lovely wife Sandy. They have been married 39 years and have two sons and two great daughters-in-law; Dr. Greg and Dr. Kelley Howell and Dr. Mike and Maureen Howell, as well as four wonderful grandchildren Andrew, Peter, Anna and Benjamin.
