Sheriff’s Office to Celebrate National Forensic Science Week with Presentations from Dave and Marla Bernard

Olathe, Kan – For the second year in a row the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Criminalistics Laboratory is celebrating National Forensic Science Week. The week of August 10-16 will be dedicated to recognizing the hard work and diligence of the Crime Lab employees. Their work solves crimes, exonerates the innocent as well as prevents the commission of other crimes. On August 12th, attendees will hear from two individuals that have intimate experience with the impact of forensic science and the role it plays in major investigations. Retired KCMO Homicide Detective Dave Bernard and his wife, Marla Bernard, will share their life changing experiences during the investigation and successful prosecution of the Precious Doe case.

It was the case that pulled at the heartstrings of almost every member of the Kansas City community. Precious Doe, the affectionate pseudonym given to the unidentified little girl found dead in 2001, still brings somber memories of a case that sparked the interest of the nation. Detective Bernard (ret.) will provide powerful insight to the case that affected him so deeply, both professionally and personally.

Marla Bernard, author of “Through the Rain: A True Crime Memoir of Murder and Survival” will walk the audience through the impact of the Precious Doe and other homicide cases her husband worked tirelessly to solve, had on their home life. She brings to light the power that murder cases have to impinge on the family life of professional investigators, and how the cumulative effect of the stressors can be survived.

When: August 12, 9:30 a.m. to noon.
Where: Johnson County Sheriff’s Office Criminalistics Laboratory, 11890 S. Sunset Dr., Olathe, KS 66061.
