Safety First in Winter Weather

Johnson County, Kan. – With winter weather upon us, we are urging everyone to use a measure of caution on Thursday and Friday.  If you can avoid driving please do so and enjoy being at home.  If you must get out, please follow these few safety tips:

  • Slow Down - Speed is always a factor in accidents during winter weather.
  • Avoid Over Correction – Tap your brakes and steer into the skid.
  • Increase Distance – Adequate distance between vehicles is a must.
  • Wear Your Seat Belt – It is a state law and will protect you in a crash.

In addition to the tips above, make sure your car is filled with gas; put extra coats or blankets in your car; buy an adequate ice scraper and make sure your cell phone is charged.  If you need assistance please call 911 or *47 for the Kansas Highway Patrol.  Before heading out you can check road conditions at www.kandrive.org .
