Approximately 18,000 individuals are processed through the Johnson County Detention Centers in a given year. A majority of these individuals are released upon posting bail, however the remainder of the detainee population is held in custody awaiting judicial review. To ensure security and safety of the detainees, an objective Classification process is utilized to determine their appropriate housing assignment.

1. Medical Screening: Within 2 hours of arriving at the Adult Detention Center, each detainee is given an initial medical screening and explanation of medical services by Medical staff.

2. Custody Level Assessment: A standardized scoring process which determines an individual’s custody and security level. Housing custody levels consist of Minimum, Medium, Maximum and Special Needs.

3. Needs Assessment: A scale designed to identify major areas of detainee needs. Once the assessment is completed, the information is forwarded to staff that coordinate programs and referral opportunities to help the detainee while they are in custody. Staff from The Johnson County Corrections Office and Johnson County Mental Health work with the Classification Unit to better access the needs of individuals.
  • Some of the programs and services available to detainees are: Coping Skills, Alcoholics Anonymous, notary service, hair cuts and bible studies.
4. Classification Review: A review of a detainee’s custody and needs assessment are conducted at regular intervals while in custody. An individual’s prior criminal history, current charges, and behavior while in custody can affect their housing assignment.
