A deputy assigned to the Detention Bureau is responsible for the safe and humane
supervision of inmates in the custody of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
Using the Direct Supervision model, deputies are placed within the housing locations
to better interact with the inmates. This interaction promotes safety and
allows the deputies to better meet the needs of the inmates.
A deputy is responsible
for numerous duties within the housing locations; such as assisting with meal service,
supervision of the distribution of medication, and monitoring the welfare of the
inmates. Inmates may also get information from deputies involving their court
cases as well as the multiple programs and services available to them during their
stay.
Deputies are also responsible for escorting inmates throughout the
facility, including to medical, the law library, the bonding room or even to get
a haircut. Deputies assigned as an escort for their shift do many miscellaneous
jobs assigned to them from the Shift Sergeants and Shift Commander. Escorts
are also responders to emergencies throughout the building.
