Pre-Classification is a specialized housing module for inmates who are new to the
Johnson County Adult Detention Center. Inmates who have gone through the booking
process will be temporarily housed in the Pre-Classification module until they go through the classification process to determine their appropriate housing assignment
in the jail’s general population
Inmates in the Pre-Classification module do not follow the routines of the regular
jail population. They keep their street clothing, are only allowed out of their
cells for three forty five minute periods each day (at which time they can make
phone calls, watch tv, take a shower, etc.), and, generally, face the most restrictive
housing rules of the entire detention facility. They do not have visitation, commissary,
or access to services such as hair cuts and program services until they are classified
and placed in their appropriate housing modules.
In Pre-Classifications, officers interact with the new inmates and attempt
to identify potential problems. Inmates coming off of drugs and alcohol, inmates
who have mental health problems, or inmates who are at risk for suicide are identified.
They are then directed to appropriate support staff that can then assist the inmate.
Officers also identify problem behavior inmates and ensure that their
behavior is noted for the Classification Officers assigning housing locations. Officers try and help the new inmates become adjusted to the
facility and explain what is expected of their behavior in the facility. When inmates are transferred from this unit to the general population, they have a working
knowledge of how the jail operates and how to fit in to their new environment.
The entire population of this special housing module may turn over once or twice
a week; with a typical Friday evening shift spent processing more than fifty inmates
in and out of the module. Between inmates going to court, new inmates being brought
from booking, and inmates moving out to regular housing, the Pre-Classification
module is the busiest housing module in the Adult Detention Center.
